Hot Air Balloon Tutorial - page 4

Step 8: Burner

Make a new raster layer and name it burner.

Choose the selection tool with these settings:

Selection type = Square
Feather = 0
Antialias = checked

Draw out the selection to approximately 12 pixels. Flood fill with black, and place it so that it is sitting where the top and bottom struts intersect (Fig. 13).

Step 9: Flame

Open the PSP Fire.tub file as a regular image file, rather than using it as a tube (Fig. 14). Choose the flame that you like (I used the middle flame in the top row). Use the lasso tool with these settings:

Selection type = Freehand
Feather = 0
Antialias = checked

Select the area you want to use (Fig. 15), and float the selction (Fig. 16).

Copy the selected area of the flame, and paste it as a new raster layer named flame on the balloon image. Resize the flame layer only, to 30%, and drag it into place over the burner (Fig. 17).

Once you're satisfied with the positioning, move the flame layer down so that it's behind the burner, skirt, and envelope layers.

Hint: For extra fullness, paste a second copy of the flame as a new selection, mirror it (Image > Mirror or Ctrl-M), and position it to fit the burner.
