Hot Air Balloon Tutorial - page 1

Step 1: Getting started

Open a new image with the following parameters:

500 x 500 pixels
Resolution = 72
Transparent background
16.7 Million Colors

Step 2: Painting the envelope

Load the first selection - Selections > Load From Disk > Selections > right-1.sel - which will be the furthest right segment of the balloon's envelope. (Shown in Fig. 1 with the "marching ants" of the selection.)

Optional: If you know how to use alpha channels, save this and future selections as you open them to alpha channels if you wish, since you will be working with them several times during this tutorial.

Flood fill the selection with the HotAirBalloon gradient, using the following settings:

Linear Gradient
Angle = 0
Repeats = 0
Invert = checked

In the Layer Palette, rename the layer to right 1.

Create and flood fill new layers for the remaining seven selections (shown in red), following the exact order below and making these changes in the gradient settings. (All eight layers are listed here for your convenience.)

right 1  -  gradient angle = 0
right 2  -  gradient angle = 20
right 3  -  gradient angle = 40
right 4  -  gradient angle = 60
left 1  -  gradient angle = 0
left 2  -  gradient angle = 350
left 3  -  gradient angle = 330
left 4  -  gradient angle = 310
Hint: There is no need to deselect until you have finished the last layer. Loading a new selection will automatically deselect the previous one.
